MD State Inspections 101

  • To register a vehicle in Maryland, drivers must receive an inspection certificate.
  • Inspection certificates can only be awarded by licensed Maryland inspection stations.
  • Inspections generally last an hour and a half, give or take, depending on the vehicle.
  • New residents of Maryland can register for a temporary, 30-day registration so that they may legally drive to the site of the safety inspection.
  • Most sellers of used cars are required to have a vehicle undergo a safety inspection before the automobile can be sold.
  • If your vehicle fails to meet safety requires, the vehicle must be re-inspected within 30-days, or 1,000 miles, of the initial inspection.
  • The fee for a safety inspection is determined by the individual inspection site's labor rate. At the inspection site, the labor fee must be prominently displayed for easy viewing access.
  • A re-inspection fee corresponds with an individual inspection station's labor rate and the rate associated with the specific part or system needed re-inspection. Any visually confirmed repairs (i.e. a busted headlights) should not be charged, but a non-visual repair that requires the vehicle to be jacked, lifted, measured, or tested in any way may be charged up to 1 1/2 times the usual hourly rate.

Whenever you buy a used vehicle, make sure you obtain the inspection certificate from the seller.

Remember, year-round preventive maintenance can help prolong the life of your vehicle while preventing the discovery of necessary repairs during your state inspection.
